22 Jan, 2015 - Posted by Ambreen A.

Providing a long desired feature, WhatsApp today announced the launch of web based access of its service. No need to point out that this move will increase the already exploding customer base of WhatsApp which currently hovers around 500 Million customers.

Today, for the first time, millions of you will have the ability to use WhatsApp on your web browser “- said the official WhatsApp blog.

It further went on to explain that “Our web client is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device -- this means all of your messages still live on your phone.”  In other words, in order  to use the desktop version, your phone should also be connected to the internet at all times.  Incase you don’t have a phone connected to the internet, you cannot use this feature.

There are a few more limitations to this.  Firstly, those with iPhones are out of luck due to “Apple platform limitations,” WhatsApp says. The service works with Android, BlackBerry, Nokia S60 and Windows devices. Secondly, Only Google Chrome browser can be used on the computer to avail this feature. Thirdly, all users need to update the WhatsApp in order to use the functionality.

Procedure for installation:

1) Go to in your Google Chrome browser.

2) Open WhatsApp( fully updated ) in your smartphone and go to Menu (which contains several options like New Group, New broadcast, Status, etc).

3) Tap on WhatsApp Web.

4) Scan the QR Code which is visible on Google Chrome browser.

You are now all set to use whatsapp on you computer!
